The Benefits of Non-Animal Skin Corrosion Testing with OECD 435/Corrositex® (CTX)

By: Katherine Hatherley, Laboratory Technical Specialist, email

OECD 435/Corrositex® (CTX) is a skin corrosion test kit that synthesizes a barrier that mimics natural skin. This test does not use live animals.

Aside from the obvious benefit of being free of animal cruelty, there are some great advantages that this testing technology provides.

The Time Advantage

Test results can be delivered within a few days rather than weeks. Animal testing can sometimes take months when it comes to sourcing, raising, and evaluating.

The Cost Advantage

There is a reduced cost when it comes to animal-free testing because you don’t have to pay for raising, housing, medical costs, handling, and all the time involved.

The Transport and Shipping Advantage

If your product is determined to be non-corrosive through testing, you could potentially remove the corrosive symbol from your shipping boxes and save money and time on shipping. If your product’s packing group is downgraded as a result of testing, you may be able to ship larger quantities using current shipping exemptions.

The Marketing Advantage

Selling a non-corrosive product may be easier than trying to market a corrosive one to consumers. Safety is top of mind when consumers see the corrosive symbol on product labels.

The Regulatory Support Advantage

Corrositex® (CTX) is an OECD validated method with a long list of regulatory acceptance, including:

  • United Nations (UN) GHS
  • European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM)
  • United States Department of Transportation – DOT
  • Transport Canada
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  • International Air Transportation Association (IATA)
  • EPA Federal Register
  • Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

Flexible Testing Options

Corrositex® (OECD 435) does not require specialized training. Corrositex® (OECD 435) can be performed by people with common laboratory bench skills such as weighing and pipetting. You may choose to perform Corrositex® testing yourself or you can also have Dell Tech’s trained laboratory technologists test your product in our own laboratory as a third party instead. The choice is up to you!
