Aerosol Flammability Testing -There really is a difference in the requirements!

By: Kirsten Alcock, Manager of Product Safety, email

Recently I have seen many products being recalled for not having the appropriate symbols on their labels and not having test data for the appropriate test on hand when Health Canada asks for it. Many of these are aerosols. I can’t stress this enough – THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN THE REQUIREMENTS FOR TESTING!

My colleagues have written a great blog regarding the differences in the requirements between the different aerosol tests AND also when they are required. I would highly suggest you read the article if you sell aerosols or pump sprays.

You really need to know what realm you are selling to and what country. The CCCR, 2001 requires you to test your aerosol OR PUMP-SPRAY in accordance with Schedule 1 of the regulations.  See the method here.

This is a test that is unique to Canada and you are required by law to follow this testing protocol. Our lab has the capability of testing this for you in-house if your internal lab does not have the appropriate instrumentation.

If you need help interpreting the CCCR, 2001 regulations, and/or your product requires flammability testing, we are here to help. Unlike many other consulting firms, we can not only help you with your compliance by advising on the statement requirements but we can test it as well.

Contact us for further information on how we can help you meet your label and testing compliance.  We have the experience to know what Health Canada is looking for.
