Required Registration of Hand Sanitizers and Antiseptic Skin Cleansers in Canada

By: Kirsten Alcock, Manager of Product Safety, email

Products that are sold as antiseptic skin cleansers or hand sanitizers within Canada are REQUIRED to be registered. The current list of products that have been properly registered can be found here.

I am finding that many products that are currently available online through smaller retailers are not properly registered which puts your HEALTH AND SAFETY at risk as a consumer. When you are purchasing a sanitizer for you and your family, be sure to look for the (Drug Identification Number) DIN or Natural Product Number (NPN). It is required to be on the label itself. If it is not, you may want to bring that to the attention of the retail store you are purchasing it from or the online merchant.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers must carry the following statements on their label:

  • For external use only.
  • When using this product avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Stop use and ask/consult a doctor/physician/health care practitioner/health care provider/health care professional if irritation develops.
  • Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, call a poison control centre or get medical help right away.
  • Flammability warning: Keep away from open flame and sources of heat.

If you do not see a DIN, NPN, or the above statements on the label for the product you are looking to purchase, do not purchase it as it is not approved for sale in Canada.

Be safe out there Canadians. Be vigilant with the products you buy for your family.  Purchase properly labelled products from companies that put your safety first and register their products. It’s the LAW!
